The African Union Commission (AUC) has formally condemned a drone attack in Kisangani, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), attributed to AFC/M23 rebel forces, warning that the incident represents a serious escalation in the country’s fragile security environment.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission described the strike as a grave violation of ceasefire commitments and an act that undermines ongoing regional and international peace initiatives aimed at stabilising eastern Congo.
Escalation in a Sensitive Security Context
Kisangani, a strategic urban centre in the Tshopo Province, has largely remained outside the epicentre of recent clashes in eastern DRC. Analysts note that the use of drone warfare in the city marks a concerning expansion of tactics, raising fears of wider destabilisation and civilian risk.
The AU reiterated its call for all armed groups to immediately cease hostilities, respect international humanitarian law, and recommit to political dialogue frameworks supported by regional bodies and international partners.
Regional Peace Efforts Under Strain
The condemnation comes amid renewed diplomatic efforts led by regional blocs and mediators seeking to contain violence linked to armed factions operating in eastern Congo. The African Union stressed that continued attacks threaten to derail progress achieved through peace talks and confidence-building measures.
Observers warn that unchecked escalation could further complicate humanitarian access, displacement management, and broader Great Lakes regional stability.
