The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into corruption and governance failures has uncovered new allegations involving the misuse of state resources in Gauteng.
On Monday, a former Ekurhuleni Metro official testified that senior ANC figure Matlala was improperly allocated state-owned vehicles during his tenure, despite not meeting the eligibility requirements.
According to the testimony, the vehicles were allegedly provided for personal and political use, diverting public resources meant for official government duties.
“This was not an administrative error; it was a deliberate misuse of public property,” the witness told the Commission.
The revelation has intensified scrutiny over the management of municipal assets, with opposition parties calling for accountability and further investigations.
Civil society watchdogs have urged the Commission to pursue stronger measures against public officials implicated in corruption. Analysts say the testimony highlights broader issues of patronage networks and the erosion of trust in governance at the municipal level.
The Commission is expected to continue hearings this week, with more witnesses scheduled to provide evidence.
