Casablanca, Morocco – July 2025
The Super Falcons of Nigeria pulled off one of the most memorable comebacks in WAFCON history, defeating hosts Morocco 3–2 in a nail-biting final to lift their 11th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.
Trailing 2–0 at halftime, Nigeria stormed back with three second-half goals, including a match-winning strike from Asisat Oshoala in the 88th minute that sent fans into rapturous celebration across the continent.
The Moroccans started strong, backed by a sold-out crowd in Casablanca, and went into the break with a comfortable lead. But Nigeria’s resilience and experience shone through in the second half, with Ifeoma Onumonu and Toni Payne finding the net before Oshoala’s dramatic winner.
“We never gave up. This victory is for every Nigerian girl dreaming big,” said captain Onome Ebi, who became the oldest player to lift the WAFCON title.
Coach Randy Waldrum praised the team’s tactical discipline and fighting spirit. “They showed the heart of champions tonight. Morocco were tough, but we stuck to the plan.”
The win marks a return to continental dominance for Nigeria, who lost the 2022 title to South Africa and faced criticism for their preparation heading into the tournament.
Off the pitch, fans across Nigeria took to the streets in celebration, with spontaneous parades in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and beyond.
The final also showcased the growing quality of women’s football in Africa, with both teams earning global praise for their skill, pace, and professionalism.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons now turn their attention to the 2025 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers, with momentum and confidence firmly on their side.
