Marrakesh, Morocco – July 2024
Banyana Banyana kicked off their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 title defence with a statement win over Ghana’s Black Queens, sealing a tense 2–1 victory that reaffirmed their championship credentials.
The match, played at the packed Grand Stade de Marrakesh, showcased the physicality, speed, and tactical discipline of two African powerhouses in women’s football.
South Africa opened the scoring in the 19th minute through forward Hildah Magaia, who pounced on a defensive error to calmly slot home. Ghana responded ten minutes later with a thunderous equalizer from captain Elizabeth Addo, sending the crowd into a frenzy.
But it was Jermaine Seoposenwe who sealed the win in the 74th minute, curling in a left-footed strike from just outside the box that left the Ghanaian keeper with no chance.
“We knew this match would test us,” said South African coach Desiree Ellis post-match. “But champions find a way, and our girls delivered when it mattered most.”
Ghana, who narrowly missed out on WAFCON 2022 qualification, showed determination throughout the match and will look to bounce back strongly in upcoming fixtures.
The result puts South Africa top of their group and boosts confidence as they pursue a historic back-to-back championship title.
The atmosphere in Marrakesh reflected the growing excitement around this year’s WAFCON tournament, with record viewership numbers and massive local support across stadiums.
The South African Football Association (SAFA) praised the team’s performance and reiterated its commitment to growing the women’s game domestically.
“Our ladies continue to inspire a new generation,” SAFA said in a statement. “We’re not just defending a title—we’re defending a legacy.”
South Africa will next face Senegal in their second group stage match, while Ghana must regroup quickly to keep their tournament hopes alive.
